Gates Hospital Re-Use
National Competition: CGA assembled the team and acted as Project Director for a winning national Competition entry to develop ideas for an appropriate re-use strategy for Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital. Our winning entry, in collaboration with developer Chason Affinity Corp proposed converting the existing hospital complex into a new Veterinary College/Teaching Hospital. The Design concept selectively “excavated” historically significant portions of the existing collection of rather haphazardly joined and intermingled collection of mostly mediocre buildings; then creating a new heat multi –storied glassy Campus commons as a Campus Heart—this space would focus on newly created significant exterior spaces designed to be open and friendly from all approaches to the complex.---- welcoming to a long standing residential neighborhood immediately to the East, and to appropriately terminate the Olmstedian Parkway and its Neighborhood on the westerly approach.
Winning Scheme envisioned salvaging almost 65% of the nearly 900,000 SF existing facility, while introducing a few very selective additions to make the campus delightful to approach day or night, and delightful to experience on the ground.
